Here are some common signs to identify whether or not you are in an abusive relationship.\n\nAbusers use many tactics to exert their power including but not limited to:\n\n<strong>Dominance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Forcing you to have sex with them<\/li>\n \t<li>Destroying your belongings<\/li>\n \t<li>Viewing you as a possession instead of a person<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">Forcing you to comply with their decisions and opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Humiliation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Insulting and calling you names<\/li>\n \t<li>Ignoring or harshly criticizing your opinions and achievements<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">Shaming and putting you down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Financial Limitations<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Withholding money and credit cards<\/li>\n \t<li>Stealing your money<\/li>\n \t<li>Making you account for all your spending<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">Restricting you to an allowance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Isolation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Preventing you from going to work<\/li>\n \t<li>Keeping you from seeing family and friends<\/li>\n \t<li>Requiring their permission or approval to go anywhere or do anything<\/li>\n \t<li>Constantly checking up on you<\/li>\n \t<li>Limiting your access to your phone and car<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">Locking you in the house<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Threatening to<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Hurt or kill you and close friends and family<\/li>\n \t<li>Commit suicide<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">File false charges against you <strong>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Denial and blame<\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Blaming their abusive behavior on something other than themselves (e.g. bad childhood, bad day, etc.)<\/li>\n \t<li>Denying their violent actions<\/li>\n \t<li>Blame you for the way they are treating you<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">Unjustly accusing you of cheating on them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nYour inner thoughts can be another indicator that you are in an abusive relationship such as feeling:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Afraid of bringing up certain topics or making certain decisions lest your partner gets angry<\/li>\n \t<li>You can&#8217;t do anything right in your partner&#8217;s eyes<\/li>\n \t<li>You deserve to be mistreated<\/li>\n \t<li>That your partner&#8217;s abusive behavior is your fault<\/li>\n \t<li>You always have to check-in with your partner<\/li>\n \t<li>That you&#8217;re just going crazy<\/li>\n \t<li>That everything will be fine if you just try harder and love your partner<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"last-child\">You are constantly obsessing over ways to please your partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nAlways remember that you are never to blame (the abuser&#8217;s behavior is their choice) and that help is available.\n\nIf you feel you are in an abusive relationship, call 1-800-799-7233 or visit http:\/\/www.thehotline.org.
